*How do you feel about getting many positive feedback from Japan?
Our team is so excited about this international traction! We always thought that our style and mission would be a great fit in Japan, so it's amazing to see the interest finally happening. Japanese style is a major
international influence - it's an honor to enter into this fashion community and I can't wait to see how our jackets get styled. We'd love to collaborate with more Japanese brands in the future.
*Did you face any challenges in the process of mass production? What was the most difficult part?
I've always said that the hardest part about starting a fashion brand is getting the clothing produced. Producing our Tent Jacket was so hard, we even made a "Failure Report" about it. Because of our small size and innovative products, we went through about 5 manufacturers and 2 sourcing teams, finally ending up producing in Ukraine. It took over a year to bring the jacket to market - and it might have even taken longer! - but we got very lucky in the end. Moving forward, our next pieces will be a little bit more familiar in silhouette, so hopefully we won't scare our suppliers anymore!
*Tell us a little bit about Will and Angela. How did you two decide to start a business together? Did you two both have "entrepreneur minds" from when you were students?
I started ADIFF as a solo operation, right before I graduated from Parsons School of Design. Since the concept for the brand came out of my senior thesis, I felt I had to strike while the iron was hot and dive right into creating the company! Although coming from a background in fashion design, I had no idea how to start or run a business; so I spent the first 6 months to a year asking a million questions and trying to figure out a road map. I met Will about a year into my entrepreneurship journey, while at an accelerator program in Boston. We were a perfect team because he loved the business side of things and was able to supplement with knowledge and experience in the areas I lacked. Will has always had the entrepreneur spirit and love startups... I never actually planned on running a company - especially right out of university!
*How did Angela became conscious about supporting the lives of refugees?
When I first went into fashion school, I had every intention of moving to Paris and becoming a couture designer. That was until the refugee crisis happened, when I "woke up" from this idea that fashion was everything and realized that there were a lot of issues in the world that were much more important.
I felt this massive sense of empathy for these people who were forced to leave their homes, through no fault of their own, with nothing but the clothing on their backs. The more I researched the crisis, the more frustrated I grew, as I realized that clothing was actually playing a key role in the safety and comfort of those on the move. And yet the fashion industry wasn't doing anything to help, or even acknowledging the crisis. I decided that if I was to remain in this industry, I had to find a way to make clothing that would help these people.
*Any plans for a new product?
Of course! We're currently developing some new pieces and are actually looking to organize a fashion week event soon. We're creating garments that complement our existing pieces and offer insight into new ways to style ADIFF jackets. Follow our progress on social media for updates!
